Hermetically Sealed Transformers

A Hermetically Sealed Transformer is a type of oil-immersed transformer that is completely sealed from the external atmosphere, meaning it does not have a conservator tank for oil expansion. Instead, the oil expansion and contraction due to temperature changes are managed within the sealed tank itself.

Key Characteristics of Hermetically Sealed Transformers:

  • The transformer tank is fully welded and sealed, preventing outside air and moisture from entering.
  • Traditional transformers use a conservator tank to manage oil volume changes. Hermetically sealed transformers do not have a conservator. Instead, they may use corrugated or flexible walls (like radiators) that expand or contract with oil volume.
  • Due to the sealed environment, these transformers require very low maintenance compared to conventional oil-filled transformers.
  • Since air cannot enter the transformer, oxidation of insulating oil is greatly reduced, prolonging oil life and maintaining better insulation properties.
